Tommy

Blood Canticle

Tommy is a young member of the Blackwood Farm household whose departure comes just before dawn, after he thanks Lestat for helping Patsy’s spirit pass into the Light. Though he is absent from the closing scene, his note prompts Lestat to offer him an unusually direct blessing: a warning against an ordinary life and an appeal to reach for something greater.

Identity and Place in the Household

Tommy belongs to the household at Blackwood Farm, where the daily work continues even after a night of supernatural events. When Lestat returns an hour before dawn, Tommy has already left; the kitchen staff are making coffee and setting dough to rise. His departure is therefore registered not through a witnessed farewell but through a note left for Lestat.

Gratitude and Lestat’s Reply

Tommy’s note thanks Lestat for helping Patsy’s spirit go into the Light. Lestat receives it as kind and unusual, then sits at the haunted desk to write back. Finding Blackwood Farm notepaper in the central drawer, he tells Tommy that he believes he will become an extraordinary man and do things that make everyone proud of him.

The reply’s central counsel is to beware of ordinary life and reach for something finer and greater. Lestat identifies that aspiration as the message of Blackwood Farm, turning a private exchange of thanks into a statement about the kind of future he hopes Tommy will claim.

Departure and Continuing Connection

Jasmine takes Lestat’s note, slides it into an envelope, and says it will be sent with the first package of fudge being prepared for Tommy. The household’s practical routines thus carry the message after its recipient has gone. His absence also becomes immediate to Jasmine: with Quinn and Mona away for a week, she says that Lestat and Nash are the only ones left in the large house, and that she will be desolate if Lestat leaves as well.

Tommy’s final appearance in the narrative is consequently defined by both departure and connection. He is away from Blackwood Farm, but his gratitude, Lestat’s confidence in him, and the promised package keep him tied to the household. The closing exchange leaves his future open while giving Lestat’s parting advice the force of a small bequest: a demand that Tommy imagine a life beyond the ordinary.
